Hanging Out with Friends

(Passe Tapuhiria, NW Makemo, Tuamotus, French Polynesia)

As a follow-up on the acclaimed dogtooth tuna, there’s unfortunately still no victorious shot to display. It’s not for lack of trying! Eventhough we moved from Makemo’s northeast pass to its northwest, there’s still dogtooth tuna here to hangout with. And that’s really all that Gregory is doing.

To date he has yet to actually take a shot at one of his new friends. Gregory claims they’re still in the getting-to-know-one-another phase. A stage characterized by putting in quality time with each other to gain a certain level of comfort and ease together. Once this relationship is built up the idea is that securing the successful shot will be that much more suave. What’s that saying about keeping your friends close and your enemies closer?

Sunrise glow. Easily rivals the sunsets.

Also not a dogtooth tuna, but it’s mighty big! Black Jack anyone?

Just me and old Jack waiting to hitch a ride to the beach. When we got home from our dinner out with Matt and Kate, Gregory had a wild shark wrangling session with this inedible fish. With the line tied to its tail he’d toss out the jack and bait the sharks in. When the 4-5 feet Greys would go in for a bite he’d haul the fish in bringing it and its predator right up on the back step. The fun only lasted about 4 tosses though, as there wasn’t much fish left after that.

Grilling up dinner on the spit!

And a palm streaming sunset.
